Reference Field Selection for Task Forms

Task Forms's reference field determines how users select the parent row under which their new child row will be created. SmartSyncApp lets you designate any column as the reference field, and values from that column are presented as a selectable list on the form.

How It Works

During Task Forms configuration, you select the reference column. SmartSyncApp reads the values from this column for all potential parent rows and presents them as a dropdown on the form. When the user selects a value, Task Forms identifies the corresponding row and creates the child row beneath it.

Common Reference Field Examples

  • Project Name for project management sheets
  • Category for product catalogs
  • Phase for construction work breakdowns
  • Department for organizational charts
  • Work Package ID for engineering structures

Key Benefits

  • Users see a clear, human-readable list of parent options.
  • No need for users to know row numbers or internal IDs.
  • The reference column can be filtered to show only relevant parents.
  • Works with existing column structures, no modifications required.

Best Practices

  • Use descriptive, unique values in the reference column. Duplicates may cause child rows to land under the wrong parent.
  • If parent rows are numerous, consider filtering to show only active or relevant parents.
