Child Row Creation for Smartsheet

SmartSyncApp's Task Forms creates new rows as direct children of a specified parent row in Smartsheet. This is the core capability that differentiates Task Forms from native Smartsheet forms, which always append rows to the bottom of the sheet without hierarchy awareness.

How It Works

When a user submits a Task Forms, SmartSyncApp uses the Smartsheet API to insert the new row immediately below the last existing child of the selected parent row and at the correct indent level. The parent-child relationship is established through the Smartsheet row hierarchy, ensuring that rollup formulas, summary fields, and parent-level calculations automatically include the new child row.

Key Benefits

  • New rows appear in the correct hierarchy position without manual repositioning.
  • Parent row formulas and rollups include the new child row automatically.
  • Reports and dashboards that filter by hierarchy remain accurate.
  • Saves significant administrative time in sheets with frequent form submissions.

Example

A product catalog sheet has categories (Electronics, Furniture, Clothing) as parent rows. When a procurement team member submits a new product via Task Forms and selects "Electronics" as the parent, the product appears indented under Electronics, and the category-level item count and total value formulas update immediately.
