Does Camera Form work without an internet connection?
A common question for field-based documentation tools is whether they can operate without a persistent cellular or Wi-Fi signal. To ensure data integrity and real-time validation against your Smartsheet records, SmartSyncApp's Camera Form currently operates as an online-first application.
Why Online-First Architecture Matters
The primary advantage of the Camera Form is its ability to perform Live Reference Lookups. When a field worker enters an Asset ID or Project Number, the form queries Smartsheet via the API to verify that the row exists before allowing a photo capture. This "pre-validation" prevents the most common data integrity issue in fieldwork: photos being orphaned because they were attached to a non-existent or misspelled record.
Working in Low-Connectivity Environments
While a continuous high-speed connection is ideal, the Camera Form is optimized for industrial environments with intermittent signals (LTE/4G). Our upload engine includes retry logic to handle brief signal drops during the transmission phase.
Expert Recommendation: If you are working in areas with zero connectivity (e.g., underground mines, remote utility sites), we recommend using the device's native camera app to capture photos and then using the Camera Form to upload them once you return to an area with signal. This allows you to still leverage the Reference Lookup and In-Cell formatting benefits once connectivity is restored.
Future Roadmap: Offline Caching
We are currently evaluating Service Worker-based caching for future releases. This would allow the form to load from local storage and queue photos for upload once a connection is re-established. Join our beta program to provide feedback on your specific offline requirements.
