What image formats does Camera Form support?

SmartSyncApp's Camera Form is designed to handle the most common image formats produced by modern smartphones and professional mobile devices. By integrating directly with the browser's Media Capture API, we ensure that images are captured and uploaded with maximum compatibility across the Smartsheet ecosystem.

Primary Supported Formats

The form natively supports and provides optimized capture for:

  • JPEG/JPG: The universal standard for mobile photography, providing high balance between image quality and file size efficiency.
  • PNG: Supported for high-fidelity captures where lossless compression is required, though typically resulting in larger file sizes.
  • WebP: Modern web-optimized format for faster uploads while maintaining visual clarity.

Mobile-Native Formats & HEIC Handling

Many modern iOS devices (iPhone/iPad) capture images in the HEIF/HEIC (High Efficiency Image Coding) format by default. While Smartsheet's native mobile app sometimes requires manual conversion, SmartSyncApp's Camera Form handles this automatically.

When an HEIC image is captured or selected via the browser, our upload engine handles the conversion or standardizes the output to ensuring it remains viewable across all Smartsheet platforms, including the desktop grid view and mobile dashboards.

Browser & Device Compatibility

Because Camera Form uses standard HTML5 media capture standards, it is compatible with:

  • iOS Safari: Uses the native Webkit implementation for direct camera hardware access.
  • Android Chrome/Edge: Leverages the Blink engine's robust media streams for high-resolution capture.
  • Desktop Browsers: Allows for direct file selection of existing JPEG, PNG, and TIFF files.

In-Cell vs. Attachment Resolution

An important distinction to understand is how the format interacts with your chosen storage mode:

  • In-Cell Images: Images are typically resized and optimized to fit the Smartsheet cell grid (max 4000x4000 pixels or standard thumbnail sizes). This ensures your sheet remains fast and responsive.
  • Attachments: The original file is preserved at its full native resolution, including all EXIF Metadata (such as GPS coordinates, timestamp, and device info), which is critical for legal evidence and field audit trails.
