In-Cell Image Formatting Issues

In-Cell images are a specialized display feature of Smartsheet. Unlike standard data, they have unique scaling and formatting behaviors that depend heavily on the configuration of the destination column.

1. Column Type Verification

Ensure that the target column in Smartsheet is a standard "Text/Number" or "Dropdown" type that has been enabled for images. If you attempt to upload to a column type that is restricted (like an auto-number or system column), the upload will fail or the image will not render correctly.

2. Maintaining Aspect Ratio

Smartsheet thumbnails attempt to fit the image into the cell while maintaining the aspect ratio of the original photo. If your images look distorted or "squished," it is likely that the row height is significantly mismatched with the column width. Expert Tip: For the best visual gallery experience, set your row height to "Tall" or "Extra Tall" in the Smartsheet grid view.

3. Resolution vs. Thumbnail Quality

Smartsheet generates its own thumbnail versions for In-Cell display. If the images look blurry or pixelated, this is often due to the native Smartsheet rendering rather than the quality of the capture. To view the original full-quality image, we always recommend enabling Attachment Mode in alongside In-Cell mode so the native file is always available in the row's attachment panel for audit purposes.

4. Sheet Performance Considerations

A Smartsheet sheet with thousands of In-Cell images can become sluggish when loading on mobile devices or slow networks. If your dashboard performance is degrading, consider using a Report to filter only the most recent inspection photos, which significantly reduces the load time compared to opening the source sheet directly.
